Description

The Red/Orange Wartskin Angler (Antennarius maculatus), also known as the Wartskin Frogfish, is an unusual and fascinating marine species known for its unique camouflage and predatory behavior. This small, robust fish has a warty texture, and it comes in a variety of colors, including red, orange, yellow, and brown, which helps it blend into its surroundings. Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, it uses its “lure” to attract prey, then quickly ambushes and consumes unsuspecting small fish or invertebrates. The Wartskin Angler is best suited for aquarists looking for something unique, but caution is advised due to its predatory nature. It can coexist with larger, non-aggressive species but will consume smaller tankmates, making it important to carefully choose tankmates. This species thrives in aquariums with plenty of rockwork and places to hide. It is generally reef-compatible but should be monitored around small invertebrates. Feeding this species live or frozen meaty foods, such as small fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans, will help maintain its health and encourage natural behavior.
