Description

The Ruby Red Dragonet is a small, peaceful, and visually captivating fish that adds a vibrant splash of color to any reef aquarium. Its body is primarily red, adorned with white spots, and it features striking yellow markings on its fins. Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Ruby Red Dragonet is highly sought after by aquarists due to its stunning appearance and interesting behavior, as it tends to stay near the bottom of the aquarium, hovering around live rock and sand.

Dragonets, including the Ruby Red, are known to be a bit more challenging to care for, primarily because of their specialized diet. In the wild, they feed on tiny crustaceans and copepods, so it’s important to provide a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock to sustain a natural supply of food. Many aquarists also offer enriched brine shrimp and mysis shrimp to supplement their diet.

While they are reef compatible and peaceful toward other tank mates, Ruby Red Dragonets can be shy, so providing ample hiding spaces with rock formations is recommended. They are best kept in peaceful community tanks where aggressive fish will not outcompete them for food. This species makes for a striking addition to nano reefs or larger reef tanks, but careful consideration of their feeding needs is essential for their long-term health.
