Description
The Sand Dollar (Clypeaster spp.), particularly those from Africa, is a charming echinoderm that resembles a flat, round disk. Known for their light brown to gray coloration, Sand Dollars are often found burrowed in sandy substrates in shallow coastal waters, where they play an essential role in the marine ecosystem.
With a peaceful temperament, Sand Dollars can be great additions to community reef aquariums, coexisting well with various fish and invertebrates. They are not aggressive and will not pose a threat to other tank inhabitants, making them a favorite among aquarists.
As herbivores, Sand Dollars primarily feed on algae and organic detritus, sifting through the substrate to find food. Providing a varied diet that includes high-quality algae and other plant matter will ensure their health and vitality.
Sand Dollars prefer stable water conditions and a minimum tank size of 30 gallons to thrive. A sandy substrate is essential for them to exhibit their natural behaviors, and providing plenty of hiding spots and stable water parameters will contribute to their well-being in captivity.
