Description
The Australian Sea Apple (Pseudocolochirus spp.) is a strikingly colorful and unique sea cucumber species known for its vibrant combination of red, blue, purple, and yellow hues. This peaceful invertebrate adds an exotic beauty to the reef tank, but its care requirements make it suitable only for advanced aquarists. Its delicate nature, specialized feeding needs, and the potential toxicity it releases when stressed require a mature, stable aquarium and careful monitoring.
Native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Sea Apple is a filter feeder that relies on a consistent supply of phytoplankton, marine snow, and other microscopic particulates suspended in the water. Its complex diet makes it challenging to maintain, and supplemental feedings with fine liquid foods are necessary for its health. Sea Apples have the unique ability to inflate and display feeding tentacles, creating a captivating show as they catch particles from the water.
Due to the potential release of toxins when stressed or threatened, the Sea Apple is best housed in a species-specific or carefully monitored reef setup with peaceful, non-nipping tankmates. Adequate water flow is essential to support filter feeding without stressing this delicate species, and great care should be taken in handling and placement to prevent accidental injury.
