Description
The Shovelnose Ray (Glaucostegus typus) is a remarkable species known for its distinctive flattened body and elongated snout, which resembles a shovel. Native to sandy and muddy bottoms in tropical and subtropical waters, this ray is often found in estuaries and coastal habitats, where it feeds primarily on crustaceans and small fish.
As an expert-level species, the Shovelnose Ray requires a large, well-maintained aquarium with ample swimming space and a soft substrate to mimic its natural environment. It is generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial behavior, particularly during feeding or breeding. Because of its size and specific care needs, including water quality and diet, this ray is best suited for experienced aquarists. A varied diet rich in meaty foods is essential for its health, and it is not suitable for reef aquariums due to its potential to disturb delicate corals and invertebrates. Providing a large tank with appropriate conditions and companions will enhance its well-being and longevity.
