Description
The Sponge Crab is a unique addition to marine aquariums, often seen carrying a piece of sponge or coral as camouflage on its back. This crab’s habit of attaching a sponge serves as both protection and disguise, making it a fascinating creature to observe. It is generally peaceful and can coexist with many tank mates, although care should be taken with delicate corals or invertebrates as it may occasionally rearrange tank items or scavenge for food.
Sponge Crabs are omnivores and will thrive on a diet of meaty foods like shrimp, as well as algae wafers and small bits of seaweed. They are best suited for tanks with live rock or coral where they can find hiding spots and natural food sources. Though relatively hardy, they require stable water conditions and should be monitored to ensure they don’t damage sensitive tank decor or other inhabitants.
These crabs add both character and function to marine aquariums, as they help with cleaning up detritus and other small particles.
