Description
The Garden Eel is a fascinating, peaceful species, often seen in groups where they anchor themselves into the substrate and sway with the current. Their bodies remain mostly hidden in the sand with just their heads and upper body exposed, which gives them the characteristic “garden” appearance when they gather in colonies. This species thrives best in deep sand beds, requiring at least 6 inches of soft substrate to burrow into.
Due to their specialized care, Garden Eels are not recommended for beginner aquarists. They require a well-established tank with stable water parameters and a peaceful environment. They feed on zooplankton drifting in the water column and may require target feeding to ensure they receive enough nutrition in a captive environment.
These eels can be quite shy, so they need a quiet tank with minimal disturbance. Ideal tankmates are other peaceful species that won’t outcompete them for food or disturb their burrowing behavior.
