Description
The Tesselata Eel, also known as the Honeycomb Moray or Leopard Moray, is a striking and powerful predator, recognized by its unique black and white honeycomb pattern. This large eel species is best suited for experienced aquarists with spacious tanks, as it requires a complex environment with plenty of hiding spots, secure rockwork, and a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape. Its impressive size and strong predatory nature make it a captivating yet challenging addition to marine setups.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Tesselata Eel is considered “Reef Compatible With Caution” due to its aggressive temperament and potential threat to smaller fish and invertebrates. While it may not harm corals, it will prey on smaller tank inhabitants, so it is best kept in a fish-only tank with similarly sized or larger tank mates.
As a carnivore, the Tesselata Eel requires a diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, fish, and squid. It should be fed multiple times a week, with food pieces suited to its mouth size. This eel may require specialized feeding tools to safely deliver food. Given its predatory instincts and powerful bite, caution should be exercised during feeding.
