Description
The Walking Batfish (Ogcocephalus darwini), also known as the Red-lipped Batfish, is a peculiar and fascinating bottom-dwelling fish. With its unique flattened body, this species uses its modified pectoral and pelvic fins to “walk” along the sea floor rather than swim, making it a visually captivating addition to a marine aquarium. It is commonly found in sandy and muddy substrates in the waters around the Galapagos Islands and the Pacific coast of Central and South America. Though peaceful, the Walking Batfish is a predator that feeds on small invertebrates and fish, so tankmates should be chosen carefully to avoid any predation. This species is best suited for aquariums with soft substrates and plenty of open space for walking and hunting. It will often bury itself partially in the substrate as part of its natural behavior. As a carnivore, the Walking Batfish should be fed a diet of live or frozen meaty foods, such as shrimp, small fish, and other crustaceans. It may be housed in reef tanks, but caution is required as it may consume small invertebrates or fish. Approximate Purchase Size: 3″ to 6″
