Description
The White Flame Scallop, renowned for its bright red mantle and delicate white tentacles, is a striking and fascinating addition to advanced reef aquariums. This scallop, sometimes referred to as the Electric Flame Scallop due to its vibrant coloration, can bring a unique aesthetic to aquascapes. However, it is classified as “Expert Only” because of its specialized dietary and environmental requirements, making it suitable only for seasoned hobbyists.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the White Flame Scallop is a filter feeder that relies on plankton, marine snow, and other fine particulates in the water column for nutrition. It requires pristine water conditions with stable parameters and a mature, well-established aquarium environment. Flame scallops do best in systems that replicate their natural habitat, which includes areas with moderate water flow to carry their planktonic food sources.
Due to their delicate nature, White Flame Scallops should be handled with care, and it’s essential to monitor water quality closely to ensure optimal health. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialized filter-feeding foods is often necessary in home aquariums to maintain their health, as they may not receive sufficient nutrition from standard aquarium water.
