Description
The White Wartskin Angler (Antennarius maculatus) is a captivating and unusual fish, known for its camouflaged appearance and unique hunting methods. With a warty, textured skin that mimics the appearance of coral or sponge, the Wartskin Anglerfish expertly blends into its environment, using its “lure” to attract prey. The White Wartskin Angler is highly sought after by aquarists for its distinctive look and fascinating behavior.
This member of the Antennariidae family prefers a tank environment with plenty of rock structures and hiding spots where it can remain concealed. While generally calm, it can show semi-aggressive tendencies towards smaller tank mates, as it is a predatory species and will readily consume any fish or invertebrates small enough to swallow.
As a carnivore, the Wartskin Angler requires a diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as shrimp, small fish, and other crustaceans. Feeding can be infrequent due to its slow metabolism but should mimic its natural hunting behavior, enticing it to strike using its lure.
Due to its unique dietary requirements and tendency to consume smaller fish or invertebrates, the Wartskin Angler is considered reef compatible “With Caution” and is best housed with larger, non-aggressive species. With a minimum tank size of 30 gallons, this anglerfish will thrive in an environment that supports its hunting and camouflaging behaviors, providing a rare and intriguing addition to specialty marine aquariums.
