The Yasha Hasha Goby Pair (Stonogobiops yasha), also known as the Yasha Goby, paired with the Candy Cane Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus randalli), creates a fascinating symbiotic relationship that captivates aquarists. Recognizable by its striking colors and unique fins, the Yasha Goby features red and white stripes along its body, with an elegant dorsal fin. This goby naturally pairs with the Candy Cane Pistol Shrimp, forming a mutualistic relationship in which the shrimp provides shelter by creating a burrow, while the goby keeps watch for potential threats.

Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, the Yasha Goby is peaceful and does well in a reef aquarium with soft, sandy substrate where the shrimp can dig. It requires minimal space, making it ideal for nano tanks, but benefits from a tank with at least 10 gallons to support the pair’s burrowing needs and activities. As a carnivore, the Yasha Goby feeds on small meaty foods, including mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp. Feeding should be done frequently to keep both the goby and the shrimp healthy.

Reef compatible and safe with other invertebrates, this pair is best housed with other small, peaceful tank mates. Watching the interaction between the goby and shrimp is both educational and enjoyable, as the goby relies on the shrimp for protection while both navigate their shared burrow.
