Description
The Yellow Back Tubelip Wrasse (Labropsis xanthonota) is a vibrant and unique member of the wrasse family, distinguished by its vivid yellow dorsal side, with a body that transitions to blue and black hues. Known for its fleshy, tube-like lips, this wrasse feeds primarily on coral mucus and small invertebrates, which makes it a fascinating but challenging species to care for. The Tubelip Wrasse is an Expert Only species due to its dietary needs and sensitivity to tank conditions, making it best suited for experienced aquarists.
Native to Indo-Pacific coral reefs, the Yellow Back Tubelip Wrasse requires an environment with live rock and ample hiding places, as well as soft sand for burrowing. Given its semi-aggressive nature, it should be housed with tank mates of a similar size and temperament. While it can coexist with some reef species, caution is advised as it may nip at corals, especially in the absence of its preferred diet.
As a carnivore, this wrasse’s diet should be supplemented with enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods. Providing a diverse diet helps ensure its health, although recreating its natural feeding habits can be challenging. With a maximum size of 4″, this wrasse requires a tank of at least 50 gallons with stable water conditions to thrive.
