Description
The Yellow Belly Hippo Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus) is a striking marine fish characterized by its vibrant yellow belly and beautiful blue body. This tang is not only visually stunning but also well-known for its active swimming behavior, making it a popular choice among aquarists. Growing up to 8 inches in length, this fish requires ample swimming space and a well-maintained aquarium to thrive.
Native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Yellow Belly Hippo Tang prefers environments with plenty of hiding spots among rocks and corals. While generally peaceful with most tank mates, it can be semi-aggressive, especially toward its own kind or similarly-shaped fish. To prevent territorial disputes, it’s advisable to introduce them to the aquarium as juveniles and maintain a suitable tank size with plenty of space and hiding places.
As herbivores, Yellow Belly Hippo Tangs thrive on a diet rich in algae and seaweed. Offering a variety of marine-based foods, such as spirulina and specially formulated tang pellets, helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. While they are compatible with reef tanks, caution should be exercised, as they may nip at corals if they feel stressed or crowded. With proper care and attention, the Yellow Belly Hippo Tang can be a stunning centerpiece in any marine aquarium.
