Description
The Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus), also known as the Polka Dot Boxfish, is a unique and charming species with a bright yellow body covered in black spots. This unusual fish is native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific and is popular for its distinctive, box-shaped body. As juveniles, they are a vibrant yellow, but as they grow older, their coloration may become more muted. The Yellow Boxfish is a moderately difficult species to care for due to its sensitivity to water quality and tendency to release toxins when stressed. This species is semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks. It is best kept in larger, well-established aquariums with plenty of swimming space. Caution should be taken in reef tanks, as the Yellow Boxfish may nip at small invertebrates and corals, making it “reef compatible with caution.” As an omnivore, the Yellow Boxfish requires a varied diet that includes both meaty foods like mysis shrimp and finely chopped seafood, as well as plant-based foods such as algae or marine vegetable matter. With the right care and environment, this species can be a fascinating and long-lived addition to a marine aquarium. Approximate Purchase Size: 1.5″ to 3″
