Description
The Red Feather Duster (Sabellastarte magnifica) is a visually appealing tube worm known for its striking red and brown, fan-shaped crown with white banding. This crown, or “fan,” extends from a protective tube to filter tiny particles and plankton from the water. Its peaceful nature and unique appearance make it an excellent addition to reef tanks of all sizes, where it can add both color and movement.
This species is commonly found along tropical reefs, where it establishes itself in stable, low-flow areas to avoid being swept away. In the home aquarium, moderate water flow is ideal to help the Red Feather Duster feed effectively without overwhelming its delicate crown. It benefits from occasional supplemental feedings of micro-plankton, marine snow, or other fine particulate foods to support its filter-feeding needs.
Because the Red Feather Duster is sensitive to poor water quality, maintaining stable conditions is essential. In a peaceful environment with adequate food and flow, this species will thrive and add a captivating, natural aesthetic to the reef aquarium.
