Description
The Hi Fin Heniochus (Heniochus acuminatus), commonly known as the Longfin Bannerfish or “Poor Man’s Moorish Idol,” is an elegant species distinguished by its long, flowing dorsal fin and striking coloration. With bold black and white bands and a yellow tail, this fish brings a graceful and dynamic presence to marine aquariums.
The Hi Fin Heniochus is generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. However, it may display territorial behavior if paired with other butterflyfish or similarly shaped fish. While it is reef-compatible with caution, it may nip at soft corals and sessile invertebrates, so close monitoring is advised if housed in a reef environment.
As an omnivore, the Hi Fin Heniochus requires a balanced diet that includes both plant-based and meaty foods. A mix of high-quality marine flakes, pellets, mysis shrimp, and spirulina is recommended to meet its dietary needs. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are ideal for maintaining its health and coloration.
Growing up to 10 inches, the Hi Fin Heniochus requires a spacious tank of at least 125 gallons, with plenty of open swimming areas and rockwork for hiding. Its attractive appearance and peaceful nature make it a popular choice among aquarists looking to add a touch of elegance to their aquarium.
