Description
The Hairy Rhinopias Scorpionfish (Rhinopias frondosa) is a rare and highly sought-after species due to its vibrant colors and unusual appearance. Its body is covered in frilly appendages that provide excellent camouflage among coral and rocky environments, making it nearly invisible to prey and predators. This species comes in various colors, including red, orange, yellow, and purple, often with intricate markings that add to its uniqueness.
This scorpionfish is an ambush predator, waiting for small fish or crustaceans to come within striking range. Its diet should consist of live foods such as small fish or invertebrates, although some can be trained to accept frozen foods. Due to its venomous spines and need for live prey, this species is recommended for advanced aquarists only. Care should be taken when handling or maintaining the tank due to its venomous nature. It is a slow-moving species and does best in a tank with plenty of hiding spots and minimal active tankmates.
Though it can be kept in reef setups, care must be taken as it may prey on smaller fish and crustaceans. However, it will not harm corals or other sessile invertebrates, making it reef-safe with caution. This fish requires expert knowledge due to its specific dietary needs and venomous spines.
