Description
The Radiata Lionfish (Pterois radiata), also known as the Clearfin Lionfish or Tailbar Lionfish, is easily identifiable by its vibrant red and white coloration with long, flowing, venomous spines. These spines, while beautiful, serve as a defense mechanism, and handling this fish should be done with extreme caution. The Radiata Lionfish is less commonly seen in the aquarium trade compared to other lionfish species, making it a prized addition to a reef tank.
A carnivorous predator, it primarily feeds on small fish and invertebrates, such as shrimp. The Radiata Lionfish does well in a tank with ample hiding spots and open space for swimming. It is considered reef safe with caution, as it may prey on smaller inhabitants. However, it usually leaves corals and larger invertebrates alone. Due to its semi-aggressive nature, it should be housed with other fish that are too large to be eaten. This lionfish is a nocturnal hunter and is most active at dusk.
