Description
The Blue Blanquillo (Malacanthus latovittatus), also known as the Blue Tilefish or Blue Sand Tilefish, is a long, slender fish with a graceful appearance and a distinctive blue and white coloration. Its streamlined body and elongated form allow it to glide effortlessly in the water, adding elegance to any large saltwater aquarium.
Native to sandy reef environments, the Blue Blanquillo requires a spacious tank of at least 125 gallons to accommodate its active swimming habits. This species is semi-aggressive and may show territorial behavior, so it is best housed with other robust or similarly sized tank mates. It prefers an environment with plenty of hiding spots in rock structures, as well as open areas for free swimming.
As a carnivore, the Blue Blanquillo thrives on a diet of meaty foods, such as shrimp, squid, and high-quality frozen or prepared carnivorous food. Its diet should be varied to ensure proper nutrition and to maintain its vibrant color.
Though generally safe in fish-only tanks, the Blue Blanquillo may be incompatible with smaller invertebrates, so it should be kept in a reef tank with caution. Its beautiful color and active nature make it a unique and captivating addition to a large, well-maintained marine setup, especially when given ample swimming space and suitable tank mates.
