Description
The Blue Hippo Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus), also known as the Pacific Blue Tang, Regal Tang, or Palette Surgeonfish, is one of the most popular fish in the saltwater aquarium hobby, thanks to its vivid electric blue body and yellow tail. Its bold black markings running through the body resemble a painter’s palette, giving it a distinct appearance.
This tang is generally peaceful and can coexist well with a variety of tank mates, although it can become slightly territorial with other tangs. As an herbivore, it primarily grazes on algae, but it also benefits from supplementary feeding of seaweed or algae-based foods.
The Blue Hippo Tang is known to be somewhat susceptible to marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans), so maintaining stable and high-quality water conditions is crucial. They are highly active swimmers and need a spacious aquarium with plenty of hiding spots to feel secure. Reef-safe, these fish add both beauty and functionality by helping to control algae growth in the aquarium.
