Description
The California Round Ray is a peaceful and attractive ray, known for its compact, rounded body and beautiful pattern of dark spots over a grayish-brown background. This species is a captivating addition to large, species-specific marine aquariums but requires expert care due to its specialized needs and sensitivity to water conditions.
Native to sandy bottoms and shallow coastal waters, the California Round Ray requires a soft substrate to avoid abrasions to its delicate underside. Its natural foraging behavior means it will search the tank bottom for food, so regular feeding with a variety of meaty foods, such as shrimp, squid, and marine fish, is essential to keep it healthy.
This ray is not reef-compatible, as it may disturb corals and smaller invertebrates while foraging. A minimum tank size of 200 gallons is recommended to give it ample space for movement. With its peaceful demeanor and intriguing behavior, the California Round Ray can be a unique and engaging focal point for dedicated aquarists who can provide the environment and care it needs to thrive.
