Description
The Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) is an ancient marine species that has existed for millions of years. Recognized for its unique, dome-shaped body and long tail spine (telson), the Horseshoe Crab is not an actual crab but belongs to its own separate group of marine arthropods. Horseshoe Crabs are peaceful scavengers, feeding on worms, small mollusks, and other detritus within the sand. Their body is covered by a protective carapace, and they use their long tail to help them flip over if they get stuck on their back. In captivity, Horseshoe Crabs can grow quite large, reaching up to 24 inches depending on the species, making them better suited for large aquariums. They prefer soft, sandy substrate where they can burrow in search of food, and they are not typically harmful to corals or other fish. However, they may inadvertently disrupt delicate coral reefs due to their burrowing behavior. Though generally hardy, they can be challenging to keep in a home aquarium because of their specialized diet and environmental needs. The Horseshoe Crab may also require supplemental feeding, as they often deplete the natural food in a tank quickly. Approximate Purchase Size: 2-6″
