Description
The Saddleback Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium), also known as the Black-backed Butterflyfish, is a strikingly beautiful fish that stands out due to its bold color patterns. Its body features a prominent black “saddle” marking, bordered by white and set against a pale yellow to cream-colored body. Its bright orange snout and a hint of blue stripes make it even more visually captivating. Native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Saddleback Butterflyfish is a peaceful species that thrives in well-established aquariums. Though it is generally peaceful, this species should be housed in larger tanks with plenty of swimming space and rock formations for hiding. When kept in a reef environment, the Saddleback Butterflyfish may nip at small invertebrates and corals, making it “reef compatible with caution.” It does best with other peaceful tankmates and should be monitored if housed with more aggressive species. As an omnivore, the Saddleback Butterflyfish will thrive on a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and finely chopped seafood, as well as plant-based foods. With proper care and attention to water conditions, this fish can be a rewarding addition to a community aquarium. Approximate Purchase Size: 3″ to 6″
