Description
The Brown Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus varius) is a unique species with a distinct bird-like snout that gives it its name. This fish has a sleek, elongated body, and its coloration ranges from light brown to white, with subtle black accents. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Brown Bird Wrasse is an active swimmer that spends much of its time exploring its environment.
This species is semi-aggressive and should be housed with other robust and semi-aggressive tankmates. It requires a large tank with plenty of live rock for hiding and swimming, and it is known for its curious and active nature. The Brown Bird Wrasse may burrow in the sand when threatened or resting.
As a carnivore, this wrasse requires a diet rich in meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and other marine-based proteins. It may also prey on smaller invertebrates, so caution is advised if housing it in a reef tank.
While it can be kept in a reef aquarium, it is not considered entirely reef safe due to its tendency to prey on smaller invertebrates and disturb corals. It is best suited for fish-only tanks or carefully monitored reef environments.
The Brown Bird Wrasse is a dynamic addition to large marine aquariums, where its active behavior and unique appearance can bring both excitement and beauty to the tank.
