Description
The Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) is one of the most iconic and sought-after marine fish due to its striking coloration and long, trailing dorsal fin. Its elegant black, white, and yellow stripes make it a true showpiece in any aquarium. However, it is also one of the most challenging species to care for and is recommended only for expert-level aquarists. The Moorish Idol is native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific and requires a large, well-established tank with pristine water conditions and ample swimming space. This species is peaceful and generally gets along well with other non-aggressive tankmates, but it can be difficult to keep in a reef environment due to its tendency to nip at corals and invertebrates. Therefore, it is considered “reef compatible with caution.” As an omnivore, the Moorish Idol requires a varied diet of both plant-based foods and meaty items such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae. Ensuring a balanced diet and maintaining high water quality are essential to keeping this species healthy. Due to its feeding difficulties and specific habitat requirements, the Moorish Idol should only be kept by very experienced aquarists who can provide specialized care.
