Description
The Niger Triggerfish (Odonus niger) is a strikingly beautiful and unique species known for its vibrant blue to purple hues that can change under different lighting conditions. Its streamlined body and elongated dorsal and anal fins give it an elegant appearance. The tail can sometimes display a greenish tint with flowing extensions, making it a standout addition to a larger marine aquarium.
Native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Niger Triggerfish is moderately aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. Although it can coexist with other robust tankmates, caution is needed when housing it with smaller or more peaceful species. It is considered reef compatible with caution, as it may nip at invertebrates like shrimp or snails, but typically leaves corals alone.
As a carnivore, the Niger Triggerfish enjoys a diet rich in meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, krill, and clams. It’s important to provide a variety of foods to ensure proper nutrition. This species is quite hardy but requires a spacious aquarium with plenty of hiding places and swimming room. A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended due to its potential size and activity level.
Though it has a semi-aggressive temperament, its curious and bold personality can make it a favorite among aquarists. With proper care and the right tank conditions, the Niger Triggerfish can thrive in home aquariums for many years, growing up to an impressive 18 inches in length.
